When I was a child, I enjoyed visiting my relatives in Los Angeles, California. As a young boy, my home in Boston was the only place I really knew. When we flew to visit my relatives in California, it felt like going to a different planet. The weather, the palm trees, the people, the things I saw, everything was totally different. Also, being an only child, I was often lonely at home. When I visited my cousins in California, I finally had brothers I could play with.

I disagree with the statement that studying math or science is more important than studying art and literature. Although studying math and science will perhaps lead to a better job later in life, I believe it is important to receive a well-rounded education in a variety of subjects. With only a limited knowledge of art and literature, how can someone be expected to hold an intelligent conversation if something about literature is brought up and he or she has no input? Balance is the key.

The university recently announced a plan to start a Campus Dining Club that will serve food made by students studying cooking in the cafeteria for the last week of each semester. The man believes that the Dining Club is a great idea. He claims that the Dining Club will be highly beneficial to cooking students. Although they cook in their cooking classes, cooking a lot of food for many people is a different situation, and will better represent what they will need to do in their jobs later. Also, the man says that the extra fee will still not be as expensive as local nice restaurants. The students can pay less for more great meals.

Target marketing involves the advertisement of a product to a specific group of people—that is, making the product seem most appealing to a certain type of person. The professor uses the example of a cell phone to show this. According to him, during a TV show catering to young people, a cell phone company will produce a commercial that shows how trendy and fun the phone is, so that it appeals to the young teenage crowd that watches the program. On the other hand, if the program is business oriented, the company will attempt to make the phone seem efficient and business-like.

The woman is supposed to play the violin in her quartet’s big concert next weekend, but she recently sprained her wrist and so is not sure if she can practice or play well in the concert. She and the man come up with two possible solutions. She can either play in the concert despite her injury or she can ask a friend to play in her place; however, her friend is somewhat unreliable and comes to practice late often. I believe she should ask her friend to play in her place. While he may be unreliable, he will still be able to practice this week before the concert, while the woman cannot practice until her injury heals. A little bit of practice is better than none.

There are two types of motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic motivation involves external influences, or rather, occurs when a person does something because of what he or she gets for doing it. The example the professor uses involves a child who does chores for allowance, who is motivated by the money to do his or her chores. Intrinsic motivation is fueled by a desire for personal satisfaction, and is the better form of motivation. The professor says that an example of intrinsic motivation is when she goes to the gym and works out. Exercising at the gym makes her feel more energetic and good about herself, so she goes to the gym for personal satisfaction.
