response

When I am away from home, I miss my mother’s home cooking the most. There is no feeling I can compare to walking into my front door after a long day of school and being greeted by the smell of warm dumplings or noodle soup. When the smell reaches my nose, all of my tiredness is washed away and all I can do is to look forward to dinner. This is even more apparent during winter; when I walk back to my dorm on a snowy day, I miss the warmth that my mother’s cooking send all throughout my house.

response

I believe that learning in a traditional college course setting is the best way to learn. Personally, I love the feeling of attending college courses; you can meet up with your friends in the library after class to talk about ideas, you can visit your professors and talk about course materials during office hours, you walk to class to learn. Learning in an online course is totally different, as you cannot talk to your classmates or your professors. I believe that personal contact is very important in learning, but online classes lack that entirely.

response

The computer department is considering offering evening computer classes, since the daytime computer classes are overcrowded and many students who want to take the course cannot find a computer to practice. However, the man disagrees with this scheduling change. The man claims that students are too busy—whether with work, social events, or club meetings—to take the nighttime courses. So the evening classes will not be well attended, which doesn’t solve the problem of the students wanting to take the courses. In addition, the man claims that the change may be expensive. Hiring more teachers and keeping the building open at night cost more than simply buying more computers for the daytime class.

response

While we often see the words we use as our primary way of conveying messages to other people, things such as our facial expression and tone can either make our message stronger or convey a different and truer idea. In the professor’s talk, he discusses two examples of this, one positive and one negative. In the first example, after a few years of not seeing each other, his favorite uncle paid him a visit. When he greeted his uncle, the man’s face lit up and he was as happy as a little kid. This made his uncle feel even happier. In the second one, he hit his hand with a hammer. While he told his daughter that he was okay, his face was clearly in pain and uncomfortable, which betrayed his words. So she kept asking him if he really was okay.

response

The student is a first year student at his university, and for his first day of class, he has left his class schedule in his dorm. Because of this, he doesn’t know where to find the classroom for his first class. The older student offers two possible solutions. One thing the student can do is to use one of the campus computers to look up his schedule. The other is for him to go to check each large lecture hall, since his psychology class is a large lecture class. I believe the better option is for him to check his schedule online. In this way, while he may be slightly late to his first class, he will know where the rest of his classes are.

response

Visual elements in a painting are used to stir up certain emotions in the viewer. Specifically, the professor in the speech covers the elements of color and texture. According to the professor, color in art evokes strong emotions in the viewer. The color red, for example, is very vivid and bright, and as such arouses strong emotions. On the other hand, the cool color blue has a calming effect. Also, texture is an important visual element in art. In a painting, texture can be shown visually. Rough areas of the painting can conjure up intense feelings while smooth or gentle features create calmness. These elements can also be used in conjunction. For example, by using red or other vivid colors with rough textures can enhance the feelings of intensity.
