Synergy

The word synergy comes from Greek, and it means “a working with.”C. Hampden-Turner, Maps of the Mind: Charts and Concepts of the Mind and Its Labyrinths (New York: Macmillan, 1982), 148. It suggests a relationship in which two systems begin to connect and interpenetrate in such a way that each enhances the other. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Pirsig’s masterful motorcycle mechanic is “working with” the engine, and the masterful teacher is “working with” students and the processes of learning.
