11-1

response

I think In Cold Blood by Truman Capote is an extraordinarily interesting book. It is a pioneer in the field of true crime novels. It combines good journalism reporting with emotional explorations about the two killers involved. The book’s plot focuses on the brutal murder of a Kansas family by two robbers during a home invasion. However, Mr. Capote wrote the book with a focus on the background of the killers and their psychological profiles leading up to the murder. He also withheld all the details of the murder until the very end, building up the suspense.

11-2

response

I agree with the idea that parents should have some control over the television programs watched by children. The strongest argument would be that children have immature minds and are eager to copy what they have seen sometimes. Thus, extreme violence or lewd pornographic television shows should not be available to children viewers. It is true that if children truly wanted to watch such shows, they would find a way to watch them anyhow. However, parents should at least exert some basic level of control so that such shows are not accessible easily.

11-3

response

The student disagrees with the school’s plan to renovate the college dormitories. The school wants to renovate because students have been moving off campus in the past couple of years and they want to stop this trend. However, the student suggests that the two-year construction will disturb many current on-campus students, encouraging them to move off campus. This would be counterproductive to the goal of attracting more students to live on-campus. Furthermore, the school is planning to raise housing costs later to help pay for the renovation process. Thus, many students will want to move off campus for less expensive housing. That is why the student thinks that the renovation process would not bring more students onto campus housing.

11-4

response

An Outsider artist is a unique type of artist. An Outsider usually lives in isolation from society, away from other artists and friends. The Outsider artist also probably has had no formal artistic training. Because of this unique background, the Outsider artist usually produces very unique, never-before-seen art. Henry Darger is an Outsider artist because he lives in isolation, just like an Outsider artist. In addition, his artwork cannot be defined by conventional artistic methods. He has never had any real training, and his 9 foot long, cluttered patchwork painting depicts this lack of training. Instead of drawing real human figures and leaving space, he cut out newspaper pictures and put them all over the canvas. Darger’s isolation and unique output as an artist make him an Outsider artist.

11-5

response

The student Frank is going to do summer research for a professor at his school, but he is having trouble with housing options. Since the professor did not reply for a long time, Frank thought that he did not get the research position and therefore did not apply for campus housing. Now, he has to either rent an apartment off campus or commute from home every day. His house is located 2 hours away. I think I would rather rent an apartment off campus because it saves money on gas and he can still visit his parents every weekend. Riding four hours every day for work is too time-wasting, and it will eventually makes him exhausted. Furthermore, living off campus can improve his ability to live independently.

11-6

response

Unity and contrast are essential elements of interior design. Unity is defined by the idea of consistency. Inside a room, having similar elements joined together makes us feel comfortable and orderly. For example, light green walls and darker green sofas combine together to create a sense of unity. However, too much unity can also make the room boring. This is why we need contrast, which carefully breaks up the unity. For example, we can put red and white cushions on the green sofa. This contrast helps the room become exciting and prevents it from becoming boring and monochromatic. However, too much contrast can also be bad, since it can lead to a chaotic room with too many things going on.
