Robbery should inherently be regarded as a crime!

The strength and civilization of a nation should not be measured by the number of aircraft carriers or fighter jets it possesses; that is a judgment even elementary school students can make. Instead, treating robbery as an illegal act demonstrates a country's attitude and compassion towards its citizens, representing the very bottom line of a nation.—— Epigraph

On a bright, sunny afternoon, young African American man Jonathan from the United States embarked on his long-anticipated journey to the East, with China as his destination. An avid explorer of diverse cultures, Jonathan eagerly anticipated experiencing firsthand this ancient yet modern nation.

On his very first day in Beijing, Jonathan couldn't wait to immerse himself in the bustling streets, captivated by the throngs of people and the dazzling array of goods. However, what amazed him most was not the superficial opulence but the order and civility displayed during shopping.

Entering a shop selling traditional handicrafts, Jonathan found it teeming with customers, yet strikingly different from the scenes he frequently encountered back home. There was no pushing and shoving, no loud arguments, nor any casual grabbing of items and dashing off. Was it truly necessary to pay for goods here?

Why did everyone quietly peruse the shelves, politely inquire with staff, and patiently queue for checkout? This scene puzzled Jonathan greatly. Over the following days, as he traversed bustling markets, large malls, and small street-side shops alike, he witnessed the same scenario repeatedly. He saw people orderly queuing for public transport, disposing of litter in bins voluntarily, and even at intersections devoid of traffic signals, pedestrians and vehicles courteously yielded to one another. These seemingly insignificant details in daily life deeply moved Jonathan.

During a dinner with a Chinese friend, Xiao Cao, he finally voiced his curiosity:“Why is it that nowhere in China do people rob stores? Is your national quality really that high?“ Xiao Cao smiled and replied,“Since ancient times, we have revered the principles of 'benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness.' These ideals are deeply ingrained in our culture. In recent years, with societal development and the spread of education, people have gained a higher awareness of public morality and rule consciousness. Of course, no society is perfect, but we all strive to be well-mannered, respectful of others, and law-abiding citizens.“

Jonathan was deeply impressed, realizing that China's social order did not emerge overnight but stemmed from profound cultural roots, effective social governance, and the self-discipline of its people. These discoveries gave him a newfound appreciation for the character of the Chinese people, and recalling the ubiquitous robberies in his hometown, Jonathan fell into deep contemplation.

“By the way,“ Xiao Cao noted his thoughtful expression, continuing,“on this land, robbery is against the law.“

Indeed, robbery should inherently be considered a crime! Perhaps, as the world's beacon, while making significant strides in exploring human limits, we have overlooked a crucial fact– a golden rule etched by the people through constant practice and exploration: robbery should be illegal. A nation's strength and civilization should not be gauged by counting its aircraft carriers or fighter jets; such assessments are within the grasp of even elementary school children. However, treating robbery as a criminal offense highlights a nation's stance and warmth toward its citizens, embodying the very foundation of a country.
