Biological Weapons

A. Expertise and knowledge about biology is like a double-edged sword.It can be used to benefit or harm humankind.Today, biological warfare is a threat to many nations, as it has been long before historical documentation.Even though there are treaties that ban or restrict the use and development of biological weaponry, it cannot be denied that several nations are secretly improving or hiding such technologies.Hence, the real status of programs concerning biological weaponry is unknown.

Biological weapons or bioweapons are instruments employing pathogens with the intent to kill, injure or inhibit persons, groups or even entire communities or nations.Examples of pathogens are bacteria or viruses that can cause fatal illnesses.In a number of historical accounts, cadavers of people infected with small pox or the bubonic plague were said to be catapulted into enemy territories in order to incapacitate the enemy.Today, the threat of biological destruction remains true and has become more terrifying.The production of biological weapons is more advanced, as are its methods of dispersion.Some causative agents used or developed as bioweapons are those that instigate central nervous system disorders, like the Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus.

C. Many studies regarding biological weaponry are being done.Yet countries that participate in such activities continue to deny their involvement.It is possible that nations will use bioweapons if needed to protect their people and their country, but it can also be used to terrorize or cause mass destruction.Knowledge about bioweapons, therefore, is a serious responsibility of each person and every government.
