Training
Training users is a critical component of any ERP system implementation and should be planned for accordingly. Best practices for training include:
- Plan training close to the Go Live date: Training users a month before they start using a new system is not very effective. It is also better to train users after Dynamics GP is already installed so they can experiment with the sample company and look at the screens in the system.
- Plan to retrain: Having to retrain users does not mean that the initial training was not a success. Repetition helps people learn. Typically, following the Go Live, many of the topics covered in the initial training will need to be revisited. In fact, some companies choose to have the bulk of their training right after the Go Live, so that users can start learning with their own data and real transactions.
- Don't train everyone on everything: Most end users of a system do not need to go through any of the setup, maintenance, or troubleshooting training. Separate your training sessions by roles or job activities. Very few users, if any, will need to be part of all the training sessions.
- Keep the training sessions reasonable: After a few hours in a training session, most users lose interest and end up not retaining the content. Schedule training sessions for two to three hours at a time.
- Get a knowledgeable trainer: If there is no available resource that understands Dynamics GP well, find a trainer for this. This may be a good role for the Dynamics GP resource on your team. If bringing in an external trainer, make sure you give them enough information about the company and your Dynamics GP implementation so they are able to tailor the training accordingly.
