Data link layer protocols

The data link layer (Layer 2) is responsible for assigning the physical protocols which are dependable upon the communication technology used in LANs. In addition, it takes care to detect and correct the errors, and getting data to the physical layer so that it can be transmitted. The term frame is used to represent the PDU at this layer, as shown in Figure 2.11. In this layer, the following communication protocols operate:

• ARP
• RARP
