Legacy SharePoint web services, WebDAV, and FrontPage Server Extensions
While legacy web services are beyond the scope of this book, they are worth mentioning because there are still rare cases in which connecting to these services is the only available option to perform certain tasks in SharePoint. Many of these services have existed since Windows SharePoint Server 2.0 (circa 2003), SharePoint Portal Server (2001), or even earlier.
From time to time, you may come across a venerable blog post that uses these frameworks to connect to SharePoint. Readers of this book should not be expected to understand how these archaic frameworks can be leveraged or how they came about, but it is important to know that they exist. Key to understanding this is the fact that not everything that worked for older versions of SharePoint (especially in an on-premises environment) can be expected to work today in SharePoint Online.
