Adding/removing ESXi hosts from a vSphere Distributed Switch

You can add new hosts to a vDS; in this phase, you can connect physical network adapters, VMs, and VMkernel interfaces to the switch.

Its is important to check your environment before new hosts are added to a distributed switch and verify all the requirements. Also, migration of existing interfaces and VMs must be planned carefully.

First of all, create all needed distributed port groups for the virtual machines and for VMkernel networking. This part will be discussed later.

Also, ensure that you add enough uplinks on the vDS to match all physical NICs (for each host) that you want to connect to the switch. This part will be discussed later.

You can use the Add and Manage Hosts wizard in the vSphere Web Client to:

Add hosts to an existing vDS
Manage host networking
Remove hosts from a vDS

The Add hosts option (or Add host and manage host networking) will guide you in adding multiple hosts at a single time:

The same wizard will also migrate all the VMs, the VMkernel network adapters, and the uplinks on the hosts to the vDS at the same time, without (or with very limited) service interruptions.

We can also choose hosts from the same wizard. We will have to ensure that the network adapters that are in use are migrated before removing the hosts from a vDS.
