core n. The core of a fruit is the central part of it. It contains seeds or pips.核心·Peel the pears and remove the cores.

incessant adj.An incessant process or activity is the one that continues without stopping.不断的;不停的·Incessant rain made conditions almost intolerable.

harassment n. Harassment is the behaviour which is intended to trouble or annoy someone.骚扰·Another survey found that 51 percent of women had experienced some form of sexual harassment in their working lives.

pierce vt. If a sharp object pierces anything, or if you pierce anything with a sharp object, the object goes into it and makes a hole in it.刺穿·One bullet pierced the left side of his chest.

rhetoric n. If you refer to speech or writing as rhetoric, you disapprove of it because it is intended to convince and impress people but may not be sincere or honest.华丽虚饰的语言· The harsh rhetoric had so soured officials that the two sides were barely speaking.

supervisor n. A supervisor is the person who supervises activities or people, especially workers or students.监督人;管理人·Each student has a supervisor to advise on the writing of the dissertation.

forge 1. vt. If one person or institution forges an agreement or relationship with another, they create it with a lot of hard work, hoping that it will be strong or lasting.锻造·They agreed to forge closer economic ties. // 2. vt. If anyone forges anything such as a banknote, a document, or a painting, they copy it or make it so that it looks genuine, in order to deceive people.伪造·He admitted seven charges including forging passports.

charity n. If you give money to charity, you give it to one or more charitable organizations.慈善·He made substantial donations to charity.

daunt vt.If anything daunts you,it makes you feel slightly afraid or worried about dealing with it.威吓·I'm somewhat daunted by the size of the task.

component 1. n. The components of something are the parts that it is made of.组成部分,部件· They were automotive component suppliers to motor manufacturers. // 2. adj. The component parts of something are the parts that make it up.组成的,构成的·Polish workers will now be making component parts for Boeing 757s.

prestige n. If a person, a country, or an organization has prestige, they are admired and respected because of the position they hold or the things they have achieved.名望;声望·It was his responsibility for foreign affairs that gained him international prestige.

modesty n. Someone who shows modesty does not talk much about their abilities or achievements.谦逊·He plays the character with tremendous concentration combined with a pleasing modesty.

wedge 1. vt.If you wedge anything,you force it to remain in a particular position by holding it there tightly or by fixing something next to it to prevent it from moving.楔入,楔进·I shut the shed door and wedged it with a log of wood. // 2. n. A wedge is an object with one pointed edge and one thick edge, which you put under a door to keep it firmly in position.楔子· Push a wedge under the door to keep it open while we're carrying the boxes in.

interim adj. Interim is used to describe something that is intended to be used until something permanent is done or established.暂时的,临时的·She was sworn in as head of an interim government in March.

cone n. A cone is a shape with a circular base and smooth curved sides ending in a point at the top.圆锥体·I entered an all-black corridor, took a right and walked into a cone of light.

chef n. A chef is a cook in a restaurant or hotel.厨师·A restaurant menu is the nexus of a diner, a dinner, a chef and the suitably hospitable environment in which a meal is served.

fragile adj. If you describe a situation as fragile, you mean that it is weak or uncertain, and unlikely to be able to resist strong pressure or attack.易碎的,脆的·The fragile economies of several southern African nations could be irreparably damaged.

expel vt. If someone is expelled from a school or organization, they are officially told to leave because they have behaved badly.把……开除;驱逐·More than five-thousand secondary school students have been expelled for cheating.

errand n. An errand is a short trip that you make in order to do a job for someone, for example when you go to a shop to buy something for them.差事,差使·Despite the obstacles, however, Ephron excelled, moving from errand girl to bona fide writer at the New York Post and Esquire.

intoxicate vt.If you are intoxicated with sth.,you are happy,excited,and unable to think clearly, especially as a result of love, success, power, etc.使陶醉,使兴奋·He rapidly became intoxicated with his own power.
