thrust 1. vt. If you thrust anything or anyone anywhere, you push or move them there quickly with a lot of force.猛推;猛塞;猛刺·They thrust him into the back of a jeep. // 2. n. Thrust is the power or force that is required to make a vehicle move in a particular direction.猛推;猛塞;猛刺·Two of the knife thrusts were fatal.

diffuse 1. vt./vi. If anything such as knowledge or information is diffused, or if it diffuses anywhere, it is made known over a wide area or to a lot of people.传播(知识、消息等);散布· Over time,however,the technology is diffused and adopted by other countries. // 2. vt.To diffuse a feeling, especially an undesirable one, means to cause it to weaken and lose its power to affect people.缓解;消除·The presidents will meet to try and diffuse the tensions that threaten to reignite the conflict.

integral adj.Something that is an integral part of something is an essential part of that thing.构成整体所必需的·Rituals, celebrations, and festivals form an integral part of every human society.

consist 1. vi.Something that consists of particular things or people is formed from them.(以……)为组成部分·My diet consisted almost exclusively of chocolate-covered cookies and glasses of milk. // 2. vi.Something that consists in something else has that thing as its main or only part.(以……)为主要组成部分·His work as a consultant consisted in advising foreign companies on the siting of new factories.

ascribe 1. vt.If you ascribe an event or condition to a particular cause,you say or consider that it was caused by that thing.将……归因于·An autopsy eventually ascribed the baby's death to sudden infant death syndrome. // 2. vt. If you ascribe a quality to anyone, you consider that they possess it.将……归属(于某人)· We do not ascribe a superior wisdom to government or the state.

suffice 1. vi. If you say that anything will suffice, you mean it will be enough to achieve a purpose or to fulfill a need.足够·A cover letter should never exceed one page; often a far shorter letter will suffice. // 2. vt.Suffice it to say or suffice to say is used at the beginning of a statement to indicate that what you are saying is obvious, or that you will only give a short explanation.不必多言·Suffice it to say that afterwards we never met again.

stability n. the condition of being steady and not changing 稳定性·Our relationship provided the stability and comfort we both needed.

etiquette n. Etiquette is a set of customs and rules for polite behaviour, especially among a particular class of people or in a particular profession.(尤指特定阶层的)礼仪;(尤指特定行业的)规矩·This was such a great breach of etiquette that he hardly knew what to do.

polarity n. If there is a polarity between two people or things, they are completely different from each other in some way.完全相反·Western cultures, structured around polarity and hierarchy, promote competition and conformity.

consensus n. A consensus is general agreement among a group of people.共识·The consensus among the world's scientists is that the world is likely to warm up over the next few decades.

tolerate 1. vt. If you tolerate a situation or person, you accept them although you do not particularly like them.容忍·She can no longer tolerate the position that she's in. //2. vt.If you can tolerate anything bad or painful,you are able to bear it.忍受·The ability to tolerate pain varies from person to person.

concurrent adj. Concurrent events or situations happen at the same time.同时发生的·He will actually be serving three concurrent five-year sentences.

comprise vt.If you say that anything comprises or is comprised of a number of things or people, you mean it has them as its parts or members.包含;由……组成·The task force is comprised of congressional leaders, cabinet heads and administration officials.

intelligible adj.Something that is intelligible can be understood.容易理解的·The language of Darwin was intelligible to experts and non-experts alike.

frantic 1. adj.If you are frantic,you are behaving in a wild and uncontrolled way because you are frightened or worried.发狂似的·A bird had been locked in and was by now quite frantic. // 2. adj. If an activity is frantic, things are done quickly and in an energetic but disorganized way, because there is very little time.忙乱的·A busy night in the restaurant can be frantic in the kitchen.

linguistic adj.Linguistic abilities or ideas relate to language or linguistics.语言的;语言学的·Hearing difficulties can slow down a child's linguistic development.

collide 1. vi. If two or more moving people or objects collide,they crash into one another. If a moving person or object collides with a person or object that is not moving, they crash into them.碰撞·Two trains collided head-on in Ohio early this morning. // 2. vi. If the aims, opinions, or interests of one person or group collide with those of another person or group, they are very different from each other and are therefore opposed.(目标、观点或利益等)相抵触;相冲突·The aims of the negotiators in New York again seem likely to collide with the aims of the warriors in the field.

terminate vt./vi.When you terminate something or when it terminates,it ends completely.终止· Her next remark abruptly terminated the conversation.

mutual 1. adj.You use mutual to describe a situation,feeling,or action that is experienced,felt, or done by both of two people mentioned.相互的·The East and the West can work together for their mutual benefit and progress. // 2. adj.You use mutual to describe something such as an interest which two or more people share.共同的·They do, however, share a mutual interest in design.

cafeteria n. A cafeteria is a restaurant where you choose your food from a counter and take it to your table after paying for it. Cafeterias are usually found in public buildings such as hospitals, colleges, and offices.自助餐厅·Students complained about the cafeteria food.
