ramble 1. vi.to talk for a long time in a way that does not seem clearly organized,so that other people find it difficult to understand you 絮絮叨叨，含糊不清地说·She's getting old and she tends to ramble a bit. // 2. vi.to go on a walk in the countryside for pleasure 漫步；漫游· There's plenty to discover as you ramble around this little island.

checkout n. In a supermarket, a checkout is a counter where you pay for things you are buying. （超市里的）收款台·Luckily, there was no line at the checkout.

ethic 1. n. Ethics are moral beliefs and rules about right and wrong．道德·Refugee workers said such action was a violation of medical ethics. // 2. n. Someone's ethics are the moral principles about right and wrong behaviour that they believe in．行为准则·He told the police that he had thought honestly about the ethics of what he was doing.

coastline n. A country's coastline is the outline of its coast．海岸线·This is some of the most exposed coastline in the world.

conceive 1. vt./vi.If you cannot conceive of anything,you cannot imagine it or believe it．想象；相信·I just can't even conceive of that quantity of money. // 2. vt./vi. If you conceive anything as a particular thing, you consider it to be that thing．认为·We conceive of the family as being in a constant state of change. // 3. vt. If you conceive a plan or idea, you think of it and work out how it can be done．构想出·She had conceived the idea of a series of novels, each of which would reveal some aspect of Chinese life.

hormone n. A hormone is a chemical, usually occurring naturally in your body, which makes an organ of your body do something．荷尔蒙·The hormone is known to affect reproduction and have an influence on the growth of tumours.

engage 1. vi.If you engage in an activity,you do it or are actively involved with it．从事·I have never engaged in drug trafficking. // 2. vt.If anything engages you or your attention or interest, it keeps you interested in it and thinking about it．吸引·They never learned skills to engage the attention of others. // 3. vt. If you engage anyone in conversation, you have a conversation with them．使加入·They tried to engage him in conversation.

deform vt./vi. If anything deforms a person's body or anything else, it causes it to have an unnatural shape. In technical English, you can also say that the second thing deforms when it changes to an unnatural shape．使成畸形·Bad rheumatoid arthritis deforms limbs.

burial n. A burial is the act or ceremony of putting a dead body into a grave in the ground．埋葬；葬礼·The priest prepared the body for burial.

tsunami n. A tsunami is a very large wave, often caused by an earthquake that flows onto the land and can cause widespread deaths and destruction．海啸·In 1896, a tsunami on the Sanriku coast left 27,122 dead.

gradient n. A gradient is a slope, or the degree to which the ground slopes．斜坡；倾斜度·I am sure this must be the steepest natural gradient of temperature on the surface of our planet.

virtue 1. n. Virtue is thinking and doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong．正直的品性· Virtue is not confined to the Christian world. // 2. n. A virtue is a good quality or way of behaving．美德·His virtue is patience. // 3. n. The virtue of something is an advantage or benefit that it has, especially in comparison with something else．优势；益处·There was no virtue in returning to Calvi along the way I had come.

courtesy 1. n. Courtesy is politeness, respect, and consideration for others．彬彬有礼·It's a matter of common courtesy to acknowledge letters. // 2. n. If you refer to the courtesy of doing anything, you are referring to a polite action．彬彬有礼的举止·By extending the courtesy of a phone call to my clients, I was building a personal relationship with them. //3. adj. Courtesy is used to describe the services that are provided free of charge by an organization to its customers, or to the general public．免费的·A courtesy shuttle bus operates between the hotel and the town.

commute 1. vi. If you commute, you travel a long distance every day between your home and your place of work．通勤·McLaren began commuting between Philadelphia and New York. //2. n. A commute is the journey that you make when you commute．通勤的路程·The average Los Angeles commute is over 60 miles a day.

scale 1. n. If you refer to the scale of anything, you are referring to its size or extent, especially when it is very big．规模；范围·However, he underestimates the scale of the problem. //2. n. A scale is a set of levels or numbers which are used in a particular system of measuring things or are used when comparing things．等级·The patient rates the therapies on a scale of zero to ten.

commodity n. A commodity is something that is sold for money．商品·Prices went up on several basic commodities like bread and meat.

hose 1. n. A hose is a long, flexible pipe made of rubber or plastic. Water is directed through a hose in order to do things such as put out fires, clean cars, or water gardens.（橡胶或塑料制的）水管·You've left the garden hose on. // 2. n. session 1. n. A session is a meeting of a court, legislature, or other official group．开庭；会议·After two late night sessions, the Security Council has failed to reach agreement. //2. n. A session is a period during which the meetings of a court, legislature, or other official group are regularly held．开庭期；会期·From September until December, Congress remained in session. // 3. n. A session of a particular activity is a period of that activity．一场（活动）· The two leaders emerged for a photo session.
