coarse 1. adj. Coarse things have a rough texture.粗糙的·All the hospital beds were covered with coarse cotton sheets. // 2. adj.If you describe anyone as coarse,you mean that he or she talks and behaves in a rude and offensive way.粗鲁的;粗俗的·The soldiers did not bother to moderate their coarse humour in her presence.

chunk 1. n. Chunks of something are thick, solid pieces of it.厚块·They had to be careful of floating chunks of ice. // 2. n. A chunk of something is a large amount or large part of it.相当大的部分;相当大的数量·The company owns a chunk of farmland near the airport.

solemn 1. adj. Someone or something that is solemn is very serious rather than cheerful or humorous.(人)严肃的;(物)庄严的·His solemn little face broke into smiles. // 2. adj. A solemn promise or agreement is one that you make in a very formal, sincere way.正式的;郑重的·She made a solemn promise to him when they became engaged that she would give up cigarettes for good.

designated adj. chosen for a particular job or purpose 指定的·The hotel was appointed a designated hotel by the Beijing Travel and Tourism Administration.

jigsaw 1. n. A jigsaw or jigsaw puzzle is a picture on cardboard or wood that has been cut up into odd shapes. You have to make the picture again by putting the pieces together correctly.拼图游戏·Both her children did jigsaw puzzles easily. // 2. n. You can describe a complicated situation as a jigsaw.错综复杂的形势·As he explained, another piece of the jigsaw fell into place.

mortal 1. adj.If you refer to the fact that people are mortal,you mean that they have to die and cannot live forever.终有一死的·A man is deliberately designed to be mortal. He grows, he ages, and he dies. // 2. n. You can describe someone as a mortal when you want to say that they are an ordinary person.凡人·She dines in the executive suite, while we lesser mortals use the staff cafeteria.

resolved adj.If you are resolved to do anything,you are determined to do it.坚决的·Most people with property to lose were resolved to defend it.

canoe n. A canoe is a small, narrow boat that you move through the water using a stick with a wide end called a paddle.划子;独木舟·A few luxuries have been smuggled in by canoe from the Solomons.

brochure n. A brochure is a thin magazine with pictures that gives you information about a product or service.小册子·In this brochure we highlight many of the Midland money transmission services.

struck vt.Struck is the past tense and past participle of strike.“strike”一词的过去式和过去分词·He hit me, so I struck him back.

celebrity 1. n. A celebrity is someone who is famous, especially in the areas of entertainment such as movies, music, writing, or sports.(尤指娱乐界的)名人·In 1944, at the age of 30, Hersey suddenly became a celebrity. // 2. n. If a person or thing achieves celebrity, they become famous, especially in the areas of entertainment such as movies, music, writing, or sports.(尤指娱乐界的)名望·He achieved celebrity as a sports commentator.

memorial 1. n. A memorial is a structure built in order to remind people of a famous person or event.纪念碑·Building a memorial to Columbus has been his lifelong dream. // 2. adj. A memorial event, object, or prize is in honour of someone who has died, so that they will be remembered.纪念性的·A memorial service is being held for her at St. Paul's Church.

revere vt.If you revere anyone or anything,you respect and admire them greatly.崇敬·The Chinese revered corn as a gift from heaven.

fluorescent adj.A fluorescent light shines with a very hard,bright light and is usually in the form of a long strip.发荧光的·Fluorescent lights flickered, and then the room was brilliantly, blindingly bright.

lodge 1. n. A lodge is a house or hotel in the country or in the mountains where people stay on holidays, especially when they want to hunt or fish.(乡野中的度假)屋舍;旅馆·The lodge has three rustic rooms,which can sleep four people each. // 2. vt.If you lodge a complaint, protest, accusation, or claim, you officially make it.正式提出·He has four weeks in which to lodge an appeal.

feat n. If you refer to an action, or the result of an action, as a feat, you admire it because it is an impressive and difficult achievement.功绩·A racing car is an extraordinary feat of engineering.

crescent n. A crescent is a curved shape that is wider in the middle than at its ends, like the shape of the moon during its first and last quarters. It is the most important symbol of the Islamic faith.新月·A glittering Islamic crescent tops the mosque.

aggregate adj. An aggregate amount or score is made up of several smaller amounts or scores added together.合计的·The rate of growth of GNP will depend upon the rate of growth of aggregate demand.

acquaintance 1. n. An acquaintance is someone who you have met and know slightly, but not well.相识之人·He exchanged a few words with the proprietor, an old acquaintance of his. //2. n. If you have an acquaintance with anyone, you have met them and you know them.结识· Have you got the feeling of acquaintance?

deceptive adj.If anything is deceptive,it encourages you to believe something which is not true.骗人的·Johnston isn't tired of Las Vegas yet, it seems, but appearances can be deceptive.
