2.16 [41] DUKE JING COMM ISSIONED A HUGE CAP AND A LONG ROBE AND HELD AN AUDIENCE WEARING THEM. YANZI REMONSTRATED.
Duke Jing commissioned a huge cap and a long robe and held an audience wearing them. Standing pompously,he looked around in an angry glare. The audience went on until the evening,w ithout com ing to an end.
Yanzi stepped forward and said: “The sages’ clothing was modest: their clothes were simple and not show y and were suitable for guiding the multitude. Their actions were light, com fortable and unhindered, and suitable for nurturing life. For this reason, inferiors took these clothes as the style, and the people vied w ith one another in imitating their appearance. But now your clothes,my Lord, which are showy and colorful, are not suitable for guiding the multitude, and your angry glare and pompous posture are not suitable for nurturing life. It is quite late in the day,my Lord,so the best thing you can do is to take off these clothes and relax.”
The Duke said: “I accept your instructions.”
He w ithdrew from the audience and took off both his clothes and hat and never wore them again.
