6 University Motto and University Anthem

The minutes of the administrative meeting which officially determined“Seeking Truth” as the motto.

According to the proposal of President Chu, an administrative meeting of Zhejiang University officially determined “Qiushi”, which means “Seeking Truth” as the school motto on November 19, 1938. In order to elucidate the contents of the motto “Seeking Truth”, President Chu published important speeches and books like Mr.Wang Yangming and Role Model for University Students (November 1938), Quintessence of Seeking Truth and Quintessence of Self-sacrifice (February 1939) and The Methodology and Quintessence of Science(May 1941)and illustrated the quintessence of “seeking truth” as “only to ask whether it is right or not regardless of personal gains or losses”.

Ma Yifu (1883-1967)

A master of Chinese culture, he was hired by President Chu to join Zhejiang University in 1938. During Zhejiang University's stay in Taihe and Yishan, he was a chair professor of Chinese culture. He gave 11 lectures in Taihe, the notes of which were compiled as The Analects in Taihe and his 9 lectures given in Yishan were compiled as The Analects in Yishan. The lectures he gave in Zhejiang University were the only experience in his life related to teaching in universities. The precious lyrics he wrote for Zhejiang University have profound meanings and great influence.

The administrative meeting of Zhejiang University was convened on December 8, 1938 to discuss the issue of university anthem and decided to invite Ma Yifu to write the lyrics.

The anthem of Zhejiang University was written by Ma Yifu and composed by Ying Shangneng, a professor of Shanghai National Conservatory of Music.
