2 Education in Ji'an and Taihe
After Hangzhou fell into enemy hands at the end of 1937, students and teachers of Zhejiang University had to leave Jiande and traveled again heading to Jiangxi Province. Students, teaching and administrative staff, and their relatives arrived in batches at Ji'an and Taihe next January via Jinhua, Yushan and Zhangshu. After moving to Ji'an, the teaching and administrative staff lived in the rural normal school; their relatives rented local houses while students all lived in Ji'an Middle School on an islet named Bailuzhou and they borrowed the rural normal school and Ji'an Middle School for classes. The picture shows Zhejiang University's temporary school buildings in Ji'an Middle School (taken in the 1980s).

Medical care was poor during the migration. Zhang Xiahun, President Chu's wife, and Chu Heng, his second son, passed away due to lack of medicine for malaria, leaving the students and teachers grief-stricken. The picture shows the scene of Zhang Xiahun's funeral (taken in 1938).
During its stay in Taihe, Zhejiang University made contributions to the development of the local community, which suffered from floods of the Ganjiang River, so Zhejiang University worked with the local department of water conservancy and the county government to build a powerful dam of 7.5 kilometers, being in full charge of its technology. The picture shows“Wharf of Zhejiang University” on that dam (taken in 1981).
Zhejiang University established Chengjiang School in Taihe to offer decent education to local children from the rural areas and children of its own teaching and administrative staff, pushing forward the development of local education.
