Text A:Introduction to Logistics

There are many different definitions for Logistics.It is a science of managing and controlling the flow of goods,energy,information,and other resources.The articles that logistics management deals with include raw materials,parts,and finished goods.The main aim is maximized profitability through the cost-effective fulfillment of orders.

The term logistics evolved from the military field. In military,logistics is a branch of military operations that deals with the procurement,distribution,maintenance,and replacement of materiel and personnel.

Today,in business,it is widely accepted that logistics includes activities such as transportation,purchasing,warehousing,and management of these activities.To a business enterprise,logistics activities may happen either internally or externally,covering the goods and information flow from original suppliers to end consumers.

Logistics activities include the planning,routing,and the movement of goods with all transport modes (see Figure 1-5),such as road,rail,sea,air,and pipeline,as well as associated activities such as warehousing,information collecting,and inventory controlling.As the supply of goods is becoming increasingly complicated,the industry of logistics is more and more important.There are several areas of logistical work,five of them seem to be more critical than others,they are order processing,inventory,transportation,warehousing,materials handling,and packaging; and facility network.The full range of functional work must be integrated to realize the maximum strategic benefit of logistics.

The logistics industry is one of the critical sectors of the economy.Every day we can feel that every product that we need moves through a supply chain.The industry is not only essential to the efficient performance of the nation,but is also responsible for GDP and the employment of the people.
