CHAPTER 4 NO PEACE OF MIND

That whole weekend, she found it difficult to concentrateconcentrate v.集中(注意力) on her studies. Her science notes and diagramsdiagram n.图表 made no sense to her. She was going to get another “F” in her report card.

Lately, that was all she was getting. She fearedfear v.害怕 the day when she handed her report card to her father for his signaturesignature n.签名.He would explodeexplode v.勃然(大怒).

Oh, how she wished the next day were Friday. Once again, they would be making their appearanceappearance n.出现 at the Pyramid Complex. But, she had to wait for five more days! She had to go throughgo through经历 the agonyagony n.极度痛苦 of waiting.

Naturally, she did badly in her test that Monday morning. She could not answer any of the questions asked.

Feeling sad and angry with herself, she walked home alone. On the way, she met Jenny who was wavingwave v.挥手;招手 cheerfullycheerfully adv.快乐地 at her. What had she to be so happy about?

“I saw you strugglingstruggle v.斗争;抗争 with your test, ”she said. “Why, you are still dreaming of that good-for-nothing Peter? ”

She replied softly, “I was not.”

Sally wanted to protestprotest v.申辩 more but decided to keep quiet. She could not deny what she was feeling.

Her silence promptedprompt v.促使;迫使 Jenny to make criticalcritical adj.批评的 remarks about him, such as the way he walked, the way he smiled and the way he talked. Everything about him was wrong.

“That's enough. Come, let's go for an ice-cream at our favourite ice-cream parlourparlour n.店铺, ” said Sally. She could not bear to hear any more.

Anyway, the rest of the week passed too slowly for the “Pyramid Kids”. They were impatientimpatient adj.急于;热切期盼 for Friday, the highlight of their week.

As for Sally, it was a miserablemiserable adj.悲惨的 week of failing her class tests and listening to her class teacher's scoldingscolding n.训斥. She forgot to do her homework. She did not bring her books. She did not bring her drawing paper.

Her teacher even warnedwarn v.警告 her, “You go on like this. I have to speak to your parents.”

That she would try her best to avoidavoid v.避免. She could imagineimagine v.想象 her father's anger if that happened.
