Divination Runes

Runes are the characters of an early Germanic writing system, used in parts of northern Europe from roughly the 2nd century AD to the early 16th century. They have long been understood to possess magical qualities. The common Germanic root of the word ‘rune’ is run, which meant ‘mystery’ or ‘secrecy’ in the languages – Old Norse, Old High German, Old English – that employed these characters. Although runes are no longer written today, their symbols are still commonly used in magic. Made from antler, these divination discs are inscribed with red runes, with the intention that they be scattered and then interpreted.
